4/26: Call For Volunteers to Resurrect Terry Plumming

2015 April 21
by theacreproject

We’re looking for volunteers to help Terry Plumming with one last project. For those unfamiliar, Terry Plumming is hard to describe and never really wanted to define itself. It was an artists collective active from 2004-2008 in Chicago, based in Pilsen. They worked across many genres, made music, published a magazine and organized events.

More details below. Please RSVP to info@acreresidency.org if you will be able to help out. Also, please feel free to spread the word!

When: Sunday April 26th 2015 — Starting at Noon CT

Where: 561 W 16th St Chicago, IL 60616

Why: Terry Plumming died in 2008. After death, the estate and remaining artifacts were gathered up and stowed in a nondescript storage unit on Chicago’s Southside. The unit (think grave) was left completely undisturbed until about a month ago. This surprise excavation revealed that Terry left behind 500 identical, killer magazines in an unassembled form. The magazines are Bacon (for more info go to: terryplumming.com); Terry’s final, monolithic media creation.

This news was leaked to a third party who subsequently stepped forward to suggest a final distribution of the estate’s value. But there was a catch (think 22): while the contents of the magazine are “complete”, the magazines are not in a distribution-ready condition. It was decided that an assembly event is needed to make good on the offer of distribution.

Who: That’s where you come in: ACRE supporters, volunteers, active participants and alumni. The settlers of Terry’s estate need your help in assembling 500 –truly one of a kind– objects. Terry needs ACRE’s people power (think you).

What: In a fair exchange for ACRE’s people power (think army), Terry Plumming’s estate planners will be providing a full scholarship award toward ACRE 2015.

The activity of assembling Terry Plumming media doesn’t require special tools or expertise. It does require a lot of folding, collating, gentle handling and ability to follow simple directions. It is the sort of lazy activity that many mature art practitioners know well: its repetitive and yet supports a delectable type of closure (think satisfaction). For those that may be unfamiliar with this type of work, its an opportunity for hands on learning of what it means to devote oneself to the practice of creating physical and public media. As with all media creation: the more hands on deck, the quicker the closure.

Terry always believed in creating a fun and productive atmosphere for events of this type and the planners of the estate will not be holding back: Food and Adult Beverages will be provided for all for all of the day and into the night until and after closure is realized. There will be a sound system cycling through Terry classics and a large, tree shaded outdoor area for grilling meats and vegetables. The setting is truly ideal.

Last note: event participants will be entitled to a Bacon (or two) made by their own hands.

Required Disclosures: Terry Plumming is dead. Long live Terry Plumming. Stop and/or Don’t stop thinking about Terry Plumming.
