FREE MONEY PIECE
Staged Situation
2011

Now in its third straight year artist Brandon Alvendia will be performing FREE MONEY PIECE at the NEXT fair 2011. This iteration will be sponsored by ACRE Projects and will be the first time the work will be publicly promoted. Inspired by the seminal work by conceptual artist Lee Lozano’s life/art performance Real Money Piece in which the artist offered a jar of money to studio visitors, who could either contribute or extract funds at will. Also serving as inspiration is the work of conceptual artist Ian Wilson, known for organizing conversations as artworks that are not documented nor reveal the content of a protracted discussion between invited artists and other guests. Also relevant is the work by artist Tino Sehgal, particularly This Is Critique, staged at the 2005 Venice Biennale.

The work FREE MONEY PIECE is a response to the economic collapse and the resulting world left in its wake. A playful gesture about the tenuous nature of value and the struggle and the ambition to move forward together with a hopeless yet optimistic eye towards the future. A multi-faceted vocal piece, nested within the hyper-market capitalist art fair, encourages visitors to participate in the situation(s) to share in a dialogue about the currency of art and its implication in our lives. Engaged participants will be treated to a special gift to be redeemed at a later time (with interest). Essentially a work of ephemeral community, FREE MONEY PIECE proposes a new index of value to celebrate the economy of language, heighten the ephemeral nature of community and mediate on the memento mori of existence.

FREE MONEY PIECE will be performed continually at the NEXT Fair Preview Event on Thursday April 28th, 2011 from 6-9 pm at various locations within the venue as well as throughout the art fair weekend at various venues and events around Chicago. Visit the ACRE booth for more details on how to participate in the work.

This isn’t exactly how I imagined it would end, but it’s much better than just giving up.

Vinculum (Coincidence)
Composition for two accordions and fixed multi-channel playback
2011

Vinculum (Coincidence) is a procedural composition that unfolds from intersections between two accordions, fixed media, spatial/temporal intervals, and audience flow.

The playback consists of multiple breathing rhythms, simple and complex tones, periodic silences, and instrumental artifacts (like crackle, hissing, rattles, etc); while the accordion parts are minimalist, based on long notes, intervalic relationships and simple musical phrases repeated over a long period of time.

The score derives its instructions from coincidences between the two accordions as they intersect with the pre-recorded material and the activity in the space.

The performance can be conditioned to different settings in ways that integrate diffused performance/audience spaces, distance, proximity, and the inherent sound characteristics of the space itself.
