ACRE and Fernwey Gallery present an opening reception on Friday, May 20 from 7-10pm at 916 N Damen Avenue, Chicago. ACRE has partnered with Fernwey Gallery to host RODRIGO LARA ZENDEJAS and JON GEIGER: MASS, the next installment in ACRE’s year-long series of exhibitions by 2015 ACRE summer residents.

Born in Mexico in 1981, Rodrigo Lara Zendejas received a BFA from the University of Guanajuato 1999-2003, Summa Cum Laude; and an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago 2011-2013, graduating with the Raymond James Nelson Fellowship. He has received several awards including: 3Arts Grant nominee, Chicago 2015; “Jóvenes Creadores” FONCA (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes) Mexico City, 2014-2015; “Extraordinary Talents Visa” U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 2014; “Teaching Artist Scholarship, Center Program”, Hyde Park Art Center, 2014; “Artist’s Grant” Residence, Vermont Studio Art Center, 2014; the International Graduate Scholarship, 2012-2013 from SAIC; and, the”John W. Kurtich Travel Scholarship” SAIC Berlin/Kassel, Germany, 2012. He won the first prize in sculpture at the “National Award for Visual Arts, 2010” in Querétaro, Mexico. Lara had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in the state of Mexico in 2011, as well as solo exhibitions in the Chicago area, including the Hyde Park Art Center in 2016, the National Museum of Mexican Art in 2015-2016, and collective exhibits at EXPO Chicago in 2015, the Chicago Architecture Biennale at 6018 North in 2015, and forthcoming solo exhibits in Marfa, Texas in 2016 and the DePaul Art Museum in 2017. He has been in such residencies as the Vermont Studio Center, ACRE, and Ragdale. Currently, Lara lives and works in Chicago and Mexico City.
Jon P. Geiger (b. 1987) received his BFA in ceramics from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2010 and an MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2014. His work examines and restructures individual languages/forms into arrangements that tell stories of achievement, the power of the land, and the frontier spirit. Upon graduation from Cranbrook Geiger’s work, The Exit, was acquired as part of the permanent collection of the Cranbrook Art Museum. Geiger has had solo shows at Good Weather gallery in Little Rock, AR and at Three Walls in Chicago, IL. His work has been exhibited most recently at the Cranbrook Art Museum in the group show, Read Image, See Text along with the group show No Empty Vessel at Gildar Gallery (Denver, CO). Geiger is currently a fellow with the Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum. Jon lives and works in Detroit, Michigan.
