ACRE Projects hosts an opening reception on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 4-8pm at 1913 W 17th St, Chicago, IL. ACRE is proud to present ETTA SANDRY & HILARY BALDWIN: MOVEMENTS AND TRANSFORMATIONS, the next installment in ACRE’s series of exhibitions by 2012 summer residents.
ETTA SANDRY & HILARY BALDWIN: MOVEMENTS AND TRANSFORMATIONS
Barely two months have passed since Etta Sandry and Hilary Baldwin spent time at the ACRE artist residency, but both artists have spent that time deeply engaging with objects tied to their experience there. Although the work on display in Movements and Transformations is not about ACRE, the site of the residency provides an important point of reference for the decisions of each artist.
Baldwin gathered wood from around the grounds in Steuben and kept bits from other projects to build sculptures. She then makes paintings inspired by the sculptures. Resemblance is not the goal, but their placement in proximity to each other hints at Baldwin’s process–one that reflects the multiplicity of vision. Baldwin’s focused meditations in various media allow her to expand her ken to include both the seen and the felt.
Sandry spent much of the summer traveling, and without a smart phone, she relied on handmade sets of directions to find her way to places like ACRE. For this exhibition, Sandry has taken these hand-drawn directions, pieces of ephemera often considered disposable, and created weavings based on their text and image. For Sandry, these weavings are about honoring the quotidian. Her process of meticulously documenting the labor that goes into each textile demonstrates her commitment to slowly unfolding the layers of meaning that she finds in the everyday.

HILARY A. BALDWIN is an artist and educator working in sculpture, painting, and installation. Her solo and collaborative work has recently been shown at Camel Art Space, Brooklyn, NY, Repetti Gallery, Queens, NY, Horton Gallery, New York, NY, and The Firehouse Gallery, Burlington, VT, and she has been awarded residencies at The Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, NY and The Museum of Arts and Design in New York. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA from The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Hilary recently moved to Chicago from Brooklyn, NY.

ETTA SANDRY is an artist, educator, and organizer currently living and working in Chicago, IL. Originally from Bloomington, Minnesota, Etta is currently pursuing her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a focus in Fiber and Material Studies. Etta works as a teaching assistant at Marwen in Chicago and is an organizer and curator at the Plaines Project gallery in the Pilsen neighborhood.

ANTHONY STEPTER is originally from Grand Rapids, MI. He studied Sociology and Marketing at Grand Valley State University and is currently in the Visual and Critical Studies masters program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While at Grand Valley, Anthony was a participant in the Civic Studio, G-rad, nest, and co-founder of Stitchy: a sewing party. Anthony worked at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Americans for the Arts before relocating to Chicago, IL. While in Chicago, Anthony has worked for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Teacher Institute in Contemporary Art (TICA) and Teaching Institute in Museum Education (TIME), as well as the Art Institute of Chicago’s Museum Education Department.
