OUTRO: Go Play Outside! Is the last exhibition at ACRE’s Pilsen exhibition space on 17th street before we expand to our new location.

Come celebrate this little gallery that could with artists Katherine Trimble, Victoria Martinez, and AlexTsocanos who will present a series of projects that activate the gallery and guerrilla style interventions outside.

From the curator: Go Play Outside! was a favorite refrain of my friend’s parents. We were loud and annoying children and the outside was the only space that could contain our nature expeditions, unwarranted re-interpretation of American pastimes (ping-pong baseball?), and our penchant for breaking things. 

OUTRO will continue Alex Tsocanos’ exploration of Camp Mossandsticks, a camp for burgeoning revolutionary girls. Volume two of the camp’s newsletter, titled The Virginity Issue, covers DIY vegetable sex toys and encourages open conversation about female sexuality (We are Sexual Beings!) that is often hindered by persistent and insidious patriarchal attitudes.  

Victoria Martinez, a long time Pilsen resident, will use neighborhood ephemera to generate a site specific installation near ACRE Projects that will transverse the streets and enter into the gallery. Evoking Pilsen’s quickly changing landscape and ACRE’s role and responsibility to its neighbors.

Katherine Trimble‘s project will not be outside, but will transform the gallery inside. Her approach is the same as the childhood scientist that live(d/s) in all of us, who combed the house and  front yard for interesting subjects. Katherine transforms bursting and bubbling experiments with water, oil, milk, hair, soil, Tums ®, grass, and sand into dramatic audio/visual projects that envelope spaces.

VICTORIA MARTINEZ is an interdisciplinary artist and educator who explores installation, site-specific intervention, collage, and fibers. Her work focuses on memory, nostalgia, and the ephemeral by honoring her work to public spaces in the Pilsen community. She has exhibited at the National Museum of Mexican Art, Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Cobalt Studio, Woman Made Gallery, and the Franklin. Upcoming projects include a residency at The Luminary in St. Louis a solo show at the Comfort Station and a two-person exhibition at Dominican University.

KATHERINE TRIMBLE is a Chicago-based cellist, composer and visual artist. She earned a BFA in Animation from the Rhode Island School of Design (2006) and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2012), and has performed and exhibited her work in a wide range of international art spaces, film festivals, music venues and public spaces. Her audiovisual compositions and performances exploit the magic in unexpected relationships between sound and image—creating accidental yet inevitable narratives. Using classical and experimental cello, field recordings, the macro lens, household materials, light and darkness, she transforms spaces to draw out connections between the microscopic and monumental and address the limitations of observation at the human scale.

ALEX TSOCANOS is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist exploring themes of self-determination through the lens of feminism and the contemporary American experience. In 2013, she received her MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 2007, she received her BA in the self-designed major “Anthropology Through the Visual Arts” from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Tsocanos’ work has been exhibited in the US and abroad. Her work has been published in Journal…ment and Bad at Sports and is included in the Joseph Labadie Collection at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Detroit Community Library at The Jam Handy (Detroit, MI), and the Printed Matter Catalog (New York, NY). In 2014, she was an Artist-in-Resident at ACRE (Steuben, WI) and was awarded a Education Fellowship at The Wassaic Artist Residency (Wassaic, NY). In 2015, she was an Artist-in-Residence at the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT).
