- Moving Forward is a Perceptual Problem
One of the Greek paradoxes created by Zeno speaks of an arrow and its trajectory in space upon release. The paradox postures that the arrow is not really moving, as if time were stopped to see the arrow at any point, it will always be static, so what is in motion is the time and not the arrow. To advance is a forward movement, and it is also a metaphor for development and progress. Seen from the front, an object moving forward appears to grow in size. But moving forward does not only indicate the increase in size (or progress). To move forward is an illusion that can make us feel happy for a moment while in reality we are standing in the same place for a long time without realizing it. In my video - created from 2 seconds of reel appropriated from Fritz Lang's 1927 film, Metropolis - the men grow in size but not move forward, walk in place without advancing.
