Lehna Huie, Do This in Remembrance of Me
ACRE Projects is pleased to present Lehna Huie’s solo exhibition, In Remembrance of Us. This exhibition is an autobiographical visual reflection of the self, serving as the artist’s love letter to her ten-year-old daughter. A lyrical voyage mapping the multiplicity of our intergenerational geographies, this body of work highlights the complex patterns of personal and cultural memory among the past, present, and future. Metaphors of windows and mirrors as portals are used to weave stories of reclamation and longing. Combining fiber, natural, and plant-based sculptural elements, Huie leans on ritual as a means to reverberate the act of bearing witness in a dystopian society.
The essence of In Remembrance of Us is a prayer call. A warning. A burial. A rebirth, stitching remnants of tender memories that move between the visible and the unseen. The exhibition gathers truth-seeking tools of revival and awakening, transporting us from the earthly plane into the realms of cyclical imagination. Through a layering of transparencies, festive neon tones, and bold textures, Huie embraces interplays of identity and ceremonial masquerade. She draws on light and shadow to narrate the lived experiences of her close-knit relationship with her daughter in today’s socio-political landscape.
Grounded in the medicines of the sacred songs and prayers that have been passed down across generations, In Remembrance of Us pays homage to the presence of ancestral wisdom whispering to us in the winds and waters, guiding and protecting us in the midst of spiritual and cultural warfare. From the roots of trees, to the holy membranes that bind us, we are reminded of the power of creativity to lead us into emancipation as a tool of survival.
We invite you to join us for the opening reception of Lehna Huie: In Remembrance of Us on Friday, March 7 from 6-9pm or during gallery open hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-4pm and by appointment.
